EVENTS
We want to put on as many opportunities for people to hear about the gospel as we can, so the CU puts on a number of events to tell as many people we can about Jesus. All of these events are focused on the gospel – since it is only by faith in Jesus that people are restored to right relationship with God – and are designed to make people feel welcome and people can bring friends or so that anyone can come and just walk in. Events that we organise include lunch time talks (talk and free lunch), evening events (once a term on campus), Christianity Explored courses, a carol service at Christmas time, events put on in halls, and also an annual events week (a week crammed full of events).
Lunch time talks are held every other week each term, and aim to tackle key issues in and around Christianity. Guests speaker are invited to come and talk about key questions people ask about Jesus and Christianity.
Lunch time talks are good to come to whether you consider yourself a Christian or not. They are ideal events to invite friends to, or just to walk in to. Speakers will aim to give thought provoking answers to the really tough questions. There is a free lunch put on and there is also a time for questions and discussion before and after the talk.
Some titles from the past have been “Is the Bible reliable?”, “Does God exist?” and “Why Does God Allow Suffering?”

Evening Events are held once every term. They are typically held in a place central on campus and consist of a talk as well as some entertainment (often live music of some kind).
Recently we have had talks about the Da Vinci Code and the existence of Truth. We have also done Grill-a-Christian (or Q&A) events, where we encourage people to ask any questions they like about Jesus or Christianity to a panel who will do their best to answer them.
There is also an annual Events Week that the CU puts on in the Spring Term. During the week we have talks at lunch time and in the evening, as well as sports events and other activities. It is a week when everyone in the CU will be involved in either the organising of events or the bringing of friends. There is loads of publicity, this week of high intensity and visibility of the CU is a fantastic opportunity to help as many people hear about Jesus as possible
As well as these main events there are Hall Events that are held in individual halls of residence organised by the hall cell groups.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EVENTS
RUCU runs some special events for international students studying at Reading. They usually take place once every two weeks in the evening, from about 6:30 till 9:30 pm. If you would like to make some new friends, join in with friendly discussions about cultural issues or want somewhere to go to enjoy free food and drink or if you'd like to help out check out this section: RUCU's Work with International Students.
CHRISTIANITY EXPLORED
Developed over 10 years, Christianity Explored is an informal course for
people who'd like to investigate Christianity, or just brush up on the
basics. It explores who Jesus was, what his aims were, and what it means to
follow him.
You're not asked to pray, sing, or read aloud, and you can ask any question
you like. Or, if you prefer, you can come along and simply listen.
If you'd like to sign up or have any questions please fill out the form on the Christianity Explored Page.
We're also always looking for leaders or people to cook so again please check out our Christianity Explored page and get involved!
BIG BROTHER'S LITTLE BROTHER (BBLB)
Just after Easter of 2006 BBLB was set-up in Reading in response to a new CU at Thames Valley University (TVU, also in Reading). This scheme pairs a large CU, like RUCU, with a small CU, like TVU. This enables us to provide support to TVU in a number of ways. An obvious example is through prayer - what better thing is there to do than to ask God for his will to be done at TVU with regard to the new CU there. Also, we can provide information when required - maybe small technical things that we take for granted here, but that at a new CU are very important. The new leaders at TVU have been able to join us for various training events too, which can only be beneficial at this time. Please take some time to pray for the work of the CU at TVU - pray for the leaders as they continue to make progress in that area.
